Food Safety bill reminds me of the Toy Safety (CPSIA) bill: hard on small producers http://www.grist.org/article/2009-0 7-30-house-food-safety-bill-questions-re main/ Milk producer fees (part of some proposals to make milke prices less screwed up) carry some of the same questions for me: how to implement self-regulatory fee structures that a proportional to the scale of operations, in order to keep small producers/specialty options/diversity of foods/toys/breeds reasonably available? (And what's reasonable?) It's not so much that I agree with any or all of these, but I found them somewhat thought-provoking (and often deserving of more time than I had to think/discuss).
I just had a lovely conversation with my grandmother, who had her 90th birthday today. She is in great spirits today. Yay! 10:26 PM Jul 27th from Ping.fm
She was also much more together than last time, after he small stroke-like events. Thank goodness. I wish I made more time for calls and letters!

Having fun this a.m. with M, playing Frog Juice (from Gamewright http://www.gamewright.com) 11:50 AM Aug 2nd from Ping.fm
It's been really fun to play with M recently. We've been sharing paints and projects more, too.
I was amused by the movie Push. Action SF Schlock! Silly colors & camera! Mind powers v. PseudoMilitary! Tried for twisty plot! Cool glass ball. 12:45 PM Aug 2nd from Ping.fm
The plot was not as twisty as I think the original writer may have had, but I enjoyed several aspects of it. The "bleeders" were inutterably stupid, as a name and as a power. A little stupidly cast in terms of race, perhaps inevitable as it was set in Hong Kong. Dakota Fanning makes a fine wise-ass.
We followed up this movie with an attempt at a double-feature, with Knowing. That annoyed and frightened me immediately (as I was so tired), and I postponed it to the next night. Ugh! Well, I wasn't frightened. This movie couldn't decide what genre it was (SF? Action thriller? Horror?), and instead of having a light, comic-bookesque hand with the science (like Push, where it was just as implausible, but knew it), it pretended to have serious science and didn't succeed. I think it had the The What the Bleep! folks consulting on the physics and discussions of determinism and randomness. Not to mention this film had a flaky, not-even-as-reasoned as M. Night Shamalyan's religious warm fuzzy, sorta. I'm all for religious questions in some movies, but definitely not ones that rely on stupid stereotypes (ooh, look, emotionally traumatized science prof estranged from religious dad) and sophomoric questions. I did like one the voice of one of the characters (you'll know it when you get to it; it's not like anything else). ... OK, I think I managed to avoid spoilers there. Let me know if I didn't and I'll edit this.
I need to lay in a stock of .03 micron pens; I keep using and misplacing the one... 3:53 PM Aug 2nd from Ping.fm

Long day, good day, tiring day. 8:18 PM Aug 4th from Ping.fm
Brunch and conversation with birthday sib and other sib; successful accomplishment of errands; some new clothes from Goodwill and my kid paying for something himself and happily (money he's earned returning bottles); a/c in car; new library books; laundry progress (I'm ahead right now); even a NAP. And homemade corn chowder for dinner from awesome sweetie.
I like it that there was time for me and art and communication. I needed that.
Our CD writer on the desktop was failing, so R bought and installed a DVD-RW instead. M observed; R is a good teacher to M with stuff like this. It did, however, take a couple of steps to make enough room in the right places to put the software.... We did, eventually, succeed. Still need now to actually do the archiving.

Interesting... but I have not heard of this researcher, nor have I seen the published paper, so I reserve judgment.
